Minister for Foreign Affairs Freivalds welcomes Polisario's decision to release all Moroccan war prisoners
"It is very pleasing that Polisario has decided to release all Moroccan prisoners of war," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Laila Freivalds.
"I presume the parties are taking advantage of the improved conditions that have now been created to break the deadlock that the conflict has reached. In the peace process that we hope can recommence, the UN and Secretary-General's Personal Envoy play a central role. Sweden is prepared to give the Envoy all the support necessary to ensure that the Saharan people's right to self-determination can be realised."
Facts
The Western Saharan independence movement, Polisario, informed the Swedish Government that it would release all remaining Moroccan war prisoners today. The initial number of prisoners amounted to over 2 000. Many of the 400 or so remaining war prisoners now being released have been imprisoned for over 20 years.
The conflict between Polisario and Morocco over Western Sahara is almost thirty years old. A ceasefire monitored by the UN Mission, MINURSO, has been in effect since 1991. Political talks between the parties are being held today under UN auspices. In July the UN Secretary-General appointed a new Personal Envoy for Western Sahara.
The conflict in Western Sahara has caused serious deprivation for the approximately 150 000 Western Saharan refugees who since 1975 have been in refugee camps in Tindouf in southwestern Algeria. Sweden is one of the largest donors to Western Saharan refugees.
POINT DE PRESSE DU 19 AOUT 2005 - DECLARATIONS DU PORTE-PAROLE -
MAROC/SAHARA OCCIDENTAL
