Detención de periodistas noruegos en la ciudad ocupada de El Aaiun
El 17 de abril de 2005 a las 11h de la mañana, las autoridades marroquíes detuvieron un periodista noruego, Radmund Steinsvag, cuando intentó tomar fotos a una manifestación pacífica organizada por decenas de saharauis en la avenida "Meca", frente al hotel Negjir, donde residen los oficiales de la Misión de las Naciones Unidas para el Referéndum en el Sahara Occidental (Minurso).
El periodista noruego fue llevado hacia la comisaría principal en la avenida "Smara", donde fue interrogado por agentes de seguridad marroquí durante una hora, antes de ser puesto en libertad.
El día siguiente (el 18 de abril 2005), a las 17 horas GMT, dos periodistas noruegos, Anne Torhild Nilsen Skuland y Radmund Steinsvag, fueron detenidos por las autoridades marroquíes cuando intentaron entrar en la sede de la Minurso para entrevistar algunos de sus responsables. Esta vez, fueron arrestados en la puerta principal de la Minurso, por la policía marroquí y conducidos hacia la comisaría principal de El Aaiun para pasar más de tres horas bajo interrogatorio.
Tras el interrogatorio, la policía marroquí les pidió entrevistarse con "asociaciones marroquíes", por lo cual fueron llevados en el coche personal del oficial de policía , Hamid Bahri, hacia el hotel "Parador" donde les esperaban dos personas y un traductor, con los cuales pasaron mas de dos horas y fueron liberados , aproximadamente, a las 23 horas de la noche.
Es de recordar que las autoridades marroquíes habían expulsado manu militari, el 5 de abril 2004, hacia Mauritania al periodista independiente noruego, Erik Hagen, tras haberlo interrogado durante varias horas en los locales de la policía en El Aaiun ocupada.
Dos meses después, la policía marroquí expulsó, el 16 de junio 2004, a dos otros periodistas noruegos, Tor Dagfinn Dommersnes y Fredrik Refvem, que intentaban entrevistarse con el activista saharaui de derechos humanos, Ali Salem Tamek.
Ante este acto de intimidación y violación del derecho de los periodistas a ejercer libremente su profesión, la Unión de periodistas y Escritores Saharauis, UPES:
- Expresa su solidaridad y apoyo a estos periodistas que han logrado romper el embargo y aislamiento mediático impuesto sobre los territorios ocupados del Sahara Occidental.
- Condena el comportamiento de las autoridades marroquíes que intentan tergiversar la realidad de su ocupación y represión contra las poblaciones Saharauis en los territorios ocupados del Sahara Occidental y en el sur de Marruecos.
- Llama a todas las organizaciones nacionales e internacionales, y en particular los medios de comunicación, a romper el bloqueo informativo impuesto sobre el territorio y divulgar la verdadera realidad de la ocupación marroquí en el Sahara Occidental.

Detention of Norwegian journalists in the occupied city of El Aaiun
In April the 17, 2005 at 11.00 am GMT, Moroccan authorities arrested a Norwegian journalist, Radmund Steinsvag, while he was trying to take pictures of a peacful demonstration organised by dozens of Saharawis in "Meca" street, in front of the hotel of ''Negjir", where the officers of the UN Mission for the referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso) live.
The Norwegian journalist was taken to the Central Police station in "Smara" street, where Moroccan agents interrogated him for an hour before letting him free.
A day after (April the 18, 2005), at 17.00 p.m GMT, two Norwegian journalists, Miss. Anne Torhild Nilsen Skuland and the same Radmund Steinsvag, were arrested by the Moroccan authorities while they were trying to got into the headquarters of the Minurso to interview some of its officers. This time, both journalists were arrested by Moroccan police at the main door of the Seat of he Minurso. They were driven to the Central police station of El Aaiun to spend more than 3 hours interrogation.
Alter the interrogatory the Moroccan police asked them to interview some "Moroccan associations". The journalists were driven in the private car of the police superintendent, Hamid Bahri, to the hotel "Parador" where two persons and a translator were awaiting them. They spent more than two hours with these men and were released then at about 23.00 p.m GMT.
It should be recalled that the Moroccan authorities had already expelled, manu-militari, the Norwegian freelance, Erik Hagen. He was expulsed to Mauritania after having undergone an interrogatory for many hours in the police station last in the occupied city of El Aaiun.
Two months later, the Moroccan police expulsed two other Norwegian journalists, , Tor Dagfinn Dommersnes y Fredrik Refvem, in June the 16, 2004. The two men were planning to interview Saharawi human right activist, Ali Salem Tamek.
In front of this act of intimidation and violation of the rights of the journalists to freely exercise their work, the Union of the Saharawi Journalists and Writers, UPES:
- Expresses its solidarity and support to these journalists who succeeded in breaking the media siege imposed on the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
- Condemns the behaviour of the Moroccan authorities who tries to distort the reality on their occupation and repression against the Saharawi population in occupied territories and south Morocco.
- Calls all national and international organisations, especially the means of communication, to break the media siege imposed on the territory and to divulge the reality of the Moroccan occupation in Western Sahara.
