In occasion of the awarding of the Foreign Policy Association Medal
to Mr Kofi Annan, the UN Secretary General spoke, in his address, of
his recent trip to North Africa and the mission of James Baker as his
Special Envoy. He said: "After years of stalemate over complicated
issues of voter identification, we are now seeing real progress
towards a free and fair referendum that may settle the future of the
people of Western Sahara".

SG continues his visit to the Maghreb
The Secretary-General would be returning to North Africa to resume
the visit to the Maghreb countries that had been interrupted due to
the crisis in Iraq. The Secretary-General would first visit the
Tindouf area on 30 November. He would have an official programme in
Algiers on 1 and 2 December, and that would be followed by a visit to
Tunisia on 3 and 4 December. From Tunis, the Secretary-General would
travel to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, where he would
attend a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Abderrahmane Youssoufi decided to postpone his trip to the occupied
Western Sahara scheduled on November 23. This is due to his presence
as chief of the Moroccan delegation at the meeting of the Socialist
International at Geneva.
Cordoba, Spain
A March for Peace in Western Sahara, was organized in the region of
Cordoba on November 7, by the group Jaima (Friends of SADR of
Cordoba) ending by a fiesta.
From 7 to13 November, the same group organized a wall paintings
competition in the schools. 50 paintings were exhibited. On day 14
followed a twinning between the schools of Cordoba with those of the
Sahara, in presence regional authorities and representatives of the
Polisario Front . Agreements of aid in scholar matters have been
signed between Andalucia, the Polisario Front and the Jaima group.
Livorno, Italy
"Saharawi libero, Per un referendum libero e giusto". Public debate
on 20.11.98 with the participation of the Governor of the Aousserd
wilaya (refugee camps), a responsible of the Polisario Front, a
responsible of the Association of Solidarity with the Saharawi people
of Livorno and the secretary general of the CGIL/SPI trade union
(organisator).

Madrid, 23-25.11.98. The Association Bir-Lehlu, from Pozuelo de
Alarcón, organizes, together with the Fundación Autor
and theAsociación de Artistas Plásticos, an exhibition
at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, of the works of 60 artists.
They will be sold in aid of the Saharawi refugees.
