PRESS RELEASE

The European Parliament intergroup "Peace for the Saharawi people" and its president Margot Kessler, welcome the liberation of 56 political prisoners by the Moroccan authorities. It welcomes the liberation, amongst them, of Saharawi veteran political prisoner Mohamed Daddach and his 24 companions, whose released was relentlessly demanded by the European Bureau for the Respect of Human Rights in Western Sahara BERDHSO, and many other voices. The European Parliament intergroup on Western Sahara calls on the Moroccan authorities to extend their support of fundamental rights to the respect of the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people by collaborating with the UN towards the rapid implementation of the 1991 UN Peace Plan and the holding of a free and impartial referendum of self-determination for the Saharawi people. The European Parliament intergroup on Western Sahara further calls on Moroccan authorities to clarify the fate of hundreds of Saharawi "disappeared", about whom so far they refuse to give any information, as mentioned in the 2001 Report of Amnesty International.

COMMUNIQUE
