Creation of the «Netherlands Foundation for Self-Determination in Western Sahara»

On the 23rd of June, at the initiative of eminent personalities solidary with the Sahrawi cause, the founding meeting of the Netherlands Foundation for Self-Determination in Western Sahara was held in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). An important Sahrawi delegation, composed of Mr. Abdessalam Omar Lahcen, president of the Association of Families of Sahrawi Prisoners and Disappeared (AFAPREDESA) and Mr. Oubi Bouchraya, representative of the Polisario Front in the Netherlands, as well as university lecturers from the Netherlands Section of the International Association of Jurists for Western Sahara took part in their activities.

The meeting was opened by a presentation of the nature and objectives of this initiative, held by Mrs. Liesbeth den Haan, general coordinator of the Foundation. In her presentation, she stressed the necessity to promote solidarity with the Sahrawi people in the Netherlands and in particular to campaign for the inalienable right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people, in conformity with the appropriate resolutions of the United Nations and the Organization of African Unity.

The Sahrawi delegation in its turn put into perspective the current and crucial period that the Sahrawi people are going through. The delegates insisted on the holding of a referendum on self-determination and the scrupulous respect for human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara. In this context, an updated list of Sahrawi disappeared persons was presented to the participants.

The jurists, in their exposé, elaborated on the recent violations of international law related to the protection of natural resources of the Sahrawi people and in particular the contracts signed between the occupying power Morocco and certain petrol companies.

The participants at the founding meeting profoundly discussed the different aspects of the structure and program of action of the Netherlands Foundation for Self-Determination in Western Sahara, and in concluding their working session they paid tribute to the courage and steadfastness of the Sahrawi people in its struggle to be granted its legitimate rights.
